Skype Update Adds HD Video Calling to iPhone 5, 4th-Gen iPad

Microsoft today launched the Skype for iOS 4.1 update, with HD-quality video calls and other general improvements to stability.

The catch: Only iPhone 5 and fourth-generation iPad users can experience the world in heightened definition.

A similar boost for Windows Phone 8 users came in March, when Redmond released an update with high-definition video for handsets like the Nokia Lumia 920, HTC 8X, and Samsung Ativ S, which can deliver up to 720 HD video.

Additionally, the 4.1 update includes a redesigned country code picker on the dial pad.

This move comes only two months after Skype unleashed its new video-messaging feature, which lets users send short videos to friends when they’re offline; Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and BlackBerry users can send unlimited video messages to other Skype users for free.

Just tap the “video message” button within the application, then hit the record button to build a three-minute message. Preview, delete and re-record, and click the envelope icon to send. The message will be waiting in their inbox whenever they sign on; the recipient is the only person who can view the video.

The iPhone and iPad updates are available now for free download in the Apple iTunes Store.
Redmond launched a revamped Skype app for Android in July after it hit a milestone 100 million installations. Version 4.0 included a cleaned-up list of recent conversations and the ability to send a quick reply.
