Twitter Updates iOS, Android Apps for Quicker Photo Uploads

Twitter on Wednesday updated its iPhone and Android apps in an effort to make tweeting easier and more seamless, the company said.
For starters, the micro-blogging service removed some of the steps previously needed to share a photo, making the process quicker overall. With the latest version, you can now tweet a photo in less than six seconds, Twitter said.

When you want to share a photo from your camera roll, simply click the photo icon on the bottom right corner of the tweet box, and that’s it. In addition, when you add an image to your tweet, you’ll now see a full preview of the photo, not just the cropped version.

“With fewer steps needed to share photos, you can more easily share what’s going on in your life and quickly return to marveling over that gorgeous sunset,” Twitter Senior Software Engineer Misha Lushin, wrote in a blog post Wednesday.

Beyond those improvements, Twitter also made some changes to accounts. When you compose a tweet, you’ll now see your avatar and username, giving you a sense of how your post will actually look. If you have more than one Twitter account, it should be easier to select which one you want to use; all you have to do is tap on your avatar.

On Android, the update brings an additional user-requested change for notifications (pictured above). The latest version lets you see more details about your interactions right from the Notifications Drawer. You’ll now be able to swipe the notification to expand it.

Meanwhile, Twitter removed the borders around timelines on the iOS version so tweets will now fill the screen.

The updated Twitter apps are available for download now in the App Store and Google Play.

Meanwhile, Twitter last week introduced login verification, which it says is “a form” of two-factor authentication intended to help users better secure their accounts. Those who sign up for login verification will have to enter their normal password plus a six-digit code sent via text every time they sign into

Double Retina: iPhone 5S reported to pack twice the pixels

Apple’s display technology is expected to leapfrog the competition once again as a new report claims the iPhone 5S will pack 1.5 million pixels.

While the “S” version is traditionally seen as a minor update, the iPhone 5S is going to need to be a substantial update this September. With phones like the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 scooping up new users left and right, Apple needs something more than a faster processor and a better camera to keep smartphone buyers from wondering just how green the grass really is in Android land. While there’s been rumors of a UI refresh set to do away with iOS’ skeuomorphism, a new report has surfaced claiming an all new display coming to the iPhone 5S with a specific focus on doubling the pixel count from 730,000 to 1.5 million.

As 1080p screens in phones become increasingly popular, the myth that the Retina display is the perfect number of pixels (because your eyes can’t recognize any more) has been busted. Simply using an HTC One next to an iPhone 5 or a Nexus 10 next to an iPad will show you that our eyes can handle a couple more pixels here and there. The display has a lot to do with the overall experience of your phone, and Apple’s looking to jump back to the front of the pack with this new 4-inch display.

Typically an “S” release phone uses the same case as the previous generation, but there have been reports that the bezel surrounding the new iPhone will be diminished slightly in order to more closely resemble the design found with the iPad Mini. If true, this phone may find itself names something other than the iPhone 5S, but there’s been no rumors stating that would be the case.

In smartphone years, the wait for September is a long one. HTC and Samsung are going to gain a lot of positive attention for themselves over the summer, and Apple will really need to come out of the gate swinging this fall with a new iPhone that is ready to blow everyone away.

Five Apps That Look Pretty, Work Well

Making an app visually appealing and easy to use (in no particular order, of course) should be at the top of any developer’s strategy. iPhone or Android, there are lots of good examples of apps that do just that. Here are five of the prettiest, best-designed ones — and the reasons why they work so well.

Dark Sky (iOS)

“Innovative, gorgeous, and highly practical,” one review of Dark Sky, a popular iOS weather app, says. You don’t need to pick up — or even own — an iOS device to see why. The radar alone lends credence to the gorgeous aspect, and the highly practical thing comes in loud and clear via the big button placement and at-a-glance info presentation. As a crowdsourced app (it got its initial funding through a successful Kickstarter drive), customer engagement was a core focus before the first line of code was written. The message? If dull subject matter like the weather can be turned into an interesting, engaging app, anything can.

Vine (iOS)

How’s this for simplicity? When you click the link to video-sharing app Vine’s web site you’re taken to a simple splash page with the application’s logo and not much else. Clicking that takes you to an App Store listing and the brief product description therein. That’s it. The app itself is just as easy, if a bit more functional: Recording and sharing a short, looping video is as easy as a few thumbtaps. In a world where big-name apps come cluttered with features just waiting for an accidental touch, there’s something refreshing about a basic click-and-go mechanic.

Evernote (Android)

Yes, that Evernote. We’re looking at the Android version here because of its excellent widget (pictured above), which lets you do all kinds of neat stuff with a bare minimum of hassle. Want to jot some quick thoughts down? Cool. Need to snap a pic as a reminder? Go right ahead. Want to record a note to self? Sure, if that’s your thing. Evernote’s ease and scalability make the app perfect for anyone whose daily duties (or faulty memory) require extensive note-taking, and the Android widget makes it even better.

Jiffy (Android)

Remember the PDA? The smartphone kind of absorbed the whole concept, of course, but the idea’s still alive and kicking in Android apps like Jiffy. If you’re busy enough to need a planner, learning a planner may be just the kind of time suck you’re looking to avoid. Intuitive is the key word behind this inspired alternative, with dead-simple task management and a UI Gizmodo says “couldn’t fit its purpose any better.” In other words, it’s built for the user’s needs — not what the developer thinks the user wants. A small distinction, perhaps, but one large enough to make Jiffy one of the most popular Android apps for planning in a market full of them. That’s got to say something, right?
Yahoo Weather

(Android and iOS)

Splat F writer Dan Frommer has perhaps the best recorded observation on Yahoo’s surprisingly wonderful weather application: “Hey, look at that,” he says, “Yahoo is capable of making something beautiful and useful.” In fact, his whole take on the app and philosophy behind it is pretty darn interesting. Like with Dark Sky, the app shows (to paraphrase Frommer) that even common, useful ideas can be tweaked and made better. Yahoo’s image isn’t quite as tarnished as it was, say, two or three years ago, but it’s still impressive for an old monolith to get a tip-of-the-cap from a younger audience. It’s also a sign that the product is one of the most useful iOS or Android apps out there. Check it out if you care about not getting rained on — or seeing a useful application at work.

iPhone 5 /4S jailbreak: recovering from iOS 6.1.3 and iOS 6.1.4 update

iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S jailbreak users have been warned by both leading jailbreaking teams to steer clear of the iOS 6.1.3 and iOS 6.1.4 updates, neither of which has been successfully jailbroken on either of the the most recent iPhone generations. But jailbreakers can end up getting stuck with the updates nonetheless when their system software goes corrupt or their jailbreak fails and they have to perform a restore, or because they already updates to iOS 6.1.3 or iOS 6.1.4 before deciding they want to jailbreak. There are a few ways to recover from such a quandary on the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S.

However, none of them are what jailbreakers are looking to hear. Downgrading to an older iOS 6 version won’t help, as the iOS 6.1.3 and iOS 6.1.4 updates permanently make an iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S non-jailbreakable. Waiting for jailbreak teams to attack iOS 6.2 or iOS 7 down the road is the passive path to recovery, while the active path is to sell of the updated iPhone and replace it with the same model but running an older system software version; such units can be had on sites like eBay.

The best way for iPhone 5 jailbreakers to deal with the iOS 6.1.3 and iOS 6.1.4 updates is to simply make sure they never get installed.

Apple (AAPL) Budget iPhone to be released in Different Colors

There had been mixed reactions from loyal users of Apple’s iPhone about the rumored released of a much cheaper version of Iphone. Some say this move could ruin Apple’s trademark of quality. Some say this move will make the company widen its mass market. While this is good for Apple’s market revenue, users were displeased as they love apple for being not mass produced.

But, good news awaits the thrifty mobile shoppers as they can finally get hold of an iPhone within their budgets plus they will be given multiple colored mobiles to choose from.

The rumored budget iPhone will be affordable, hip and cool.

A Blogger from Macotakara Japanese site revealed that unnamed sources confirmed that the budget iPhone, indeed, will be released in different colors.

The Japanese blogger said, “I have 2 informations about color variation of cheaper iPhone from several sources. The first is Navy, Gold Orange, White and Gray, and 2nd is White Pink, green, Blue and Yellow-orange. I can say one thing from these information, namely both sets do not contain Black model.”

The blogger’s unnamed sources also told him that 1,000 budget iPhones will be release in June for field testing. Come July to September, these units will be shipped to different outlets.

As for the iPhone 5S, this model will be the flag-ship model as soon as the budget iPhone hits the market. The iPhone 5S will have dual-led flash. The led flash will be shaped like a mic-hole and was placed just between iSight camera and flash. The iPhone 5S will also have new additional colors – green and gold.

The Japanese blogger also mentioned that as for the iPad 5th generation, “the back microphone hole, which was removed from iPod mini product, however, was placed on prototype, will be added on this new iPod. And he told ipAd 5th may support standard SIM nor than only supported data-SIM. Unfortunately, new ipAd will be shipped after iPhone 5S.”

Meanwhile, it looks like, mobile analysts is also seeing the possibility of Apple releasing the budget iPhone by September. Analysts saw that Apple was motivated by its past experiences of creating cheaper version of gadgets and getting surge in the market revenue as in the case of iPad Mini and iPod Nano.

Plus, with this strategy, Apple was able to tap all possible billion-dollars worth of market including users in the developing world.

Asymco’s Horace Dediu said that “there’s no reason why Apple can’t embark on this route come September. The key challenge will be whether it can retain its mystique of exclusiveness at a cheaper price pont. Given the size of the prospective market and what we have seen with the iPad, Apple may be willing to sacrifice some margin to ensure that it can target a new market segment and hope that’s unique design aesthetics can draw enough big crowd.”

He said that “the low-end phone could be a wristwatch. But we’ll have to wait and see what Aplle’s process of innovation delivers in September, until then brace yourself for a flurry of speculation.”
